BLACK EARTH / RED EARTH (SCR014)

Andrew Leslie Hooker: no-input mixing board, electro-acoustic editing & composition, mastering.
Nick Janczak: Trumpet, FX pedals

Black Earth/Red Earth is based upon a compositional methodology entitled Found Complexity (being developed as part of a practice-based PhD at the University of Huddersfield, UK), which fundamentally involves the use of the no-input mixing board (adopted as an instrument during the late 20th century by musicians and composers such as Toshimaru Nakamura and David Lee Myers) in generating an improvised sound-object to be interpreted by highly accomplished players of traditional acoustic instruments. Those interpretations are then electro-acoustically manipulated, edited and layered in order to arrive at a sans-nimb (no-input mixing board) version of the ‘object’ (i.e. only the elaborated recordings of the acoustic instrument) which the players and composer will ultimately respond to in devising a final score.

This LP is unique in the fact that it is the first (and probably the last) time that a nimb sound-object has been interpreted by a musician (the wonderfully sensitive trumpeter Nick Janczak) playing an acoustic instrument filtered through electronics, and then (after being manipulated and layered), mixed together with the original sound source without any further reinterpretation. Indeed, the nimb track that Nick first improvised to (including its duration) remains completely intact, as do the timings of his original improvisation.

Nick Janczak has been deeply involved in improvised music over the last 40 years. There have been numerous forays into other music genres but these were for the purpose of expanding his musical technique. His current project There Is No More There Anymore in which he works closely with a visual artist and other guest musicians from around the world, making short abstract films as a trumpet player, producer/editor sees him at his most fulfilled.
