“Sounding Fresco”

These live solo performances were originally intended as a demonstration of the acoustics of highly reverberant spaces during my “Sounding Buildings” music-architecture workshop for the scenography students of the Norwegian Theatre Akademie. The dark, barrel-vaulted room of the Emanuel Vigeland Mausloeum was nevertheless a unique experience with one of the highest room size to reverb ratios that I have ever performed in. The inside walls and roof are covered by a giant fresco (“Vita”) whose dramatic erotic imagery depicts human life from birth to death. The sound wildly ricocheted around the space and I had the sense that the painted naked figures became animated - a ghoulish audience flying around in the sonic cloud I created using my hybrid trumpet palette of drones, ragas, and extended sound textures.
